Iraq: Iraqiya List Threatens Withdrawal

by admin ~ April 21st, 2010
Iraqiya List may withdraw from the political process if other parliamentary blocs align to exclude or marginalize it, Asharq Al-Awsat reported April 19, citing Iraqiya List spokeswoman Maysun al-Damaluji. She said an alliance between the Iraqi National Alliance and current Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s State of Law Coalition would be considered a “sectarian alignment” and rejected, echoing earlier statements by Muqtada al-Sadr of the Sadrist bloc. Damaluji said Iraqiya List and its candidate, Iyad Allawi, “should be asked constitutionally and officially to form the government.” She added, “If we are unable to form [a government] in one month, then we will see what we have to say.”

Iraq parliamentary vote results: Allawi 91 seats, Maliki 89 seats

by admin ~ April 11th, 2010

The results of Iraq’s March 7 parliamentary election were released late Friday with Iraqiya bloc, led by former Prime Minister Ayad Allawi, securing 91 seats, and State of Law bloc, led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, winning 89 seats in the 325-member parliament.
The results put the Iraqi National Alliance (INA), a coalition led by Shiite groups, in the thirds place with 70 seats, and Kurdistania, comprised of the autonomous Kurdish region’s two long-dominant blocs, in the fourth place with 43 seats.

The merger of INA with any party is very important in forming a coalition government. INA is coalition between the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, led by Ammar al-Hakim, and the Sadrist followers of Muqtada al-Sadr.

Prime Minister Maliki, however, refused to accept the results, saying that the results are “preliminary”.

“For sure, we will not accept these results,” Maliki told a news conference. “The election results are not final.”

Before the release of election results Maliki called for a nationwide manual recount of votes, alleging irregularities in the counting process.

Constitutionally the election results must be certified by a court.

Allawi’s victory signals he will be given the first opportunity to form a government, which would require a coalition holding at least a majority of 163 seats.

If Maliki fails to do so within 30 days, Iraq’s president, who himself is elected by parliament, would choose the leader of another bloc to try to form a coalition government.

Immediately after the release of election results, Allawi, who served as prime minister in 2004-5, pledged to “work with all sides” to form a government.

“For all who want and wish to participate in building Iraq, we will together bury political sectarianism and political regionalism,” Allawi told a press conference.
